Gingivitis is a mild inflammation of the gums. It is usually caused by plaque and tartar build-up between the teeth and the gums. It may also be influenced by heredity cigarettes or poor oral hygiene. Gingivitis can be detected since the gums are red, swollen, bleed or are sensitive though sometimes none of the above visible signs of the disease are present.

Periodontitis is a more severe form of inflammation of the gums. It attacks the gums, ligaments as well as the bone that all support and surround teeth. Gums may start to receed and teeth become mobile.
Periodontitis is not detected the same way gingivitis is, since it usually causes no pain. Health care professionals take measurements that they then keep in a chart to evaluate. It is important to treat before developing severe periodontitis. More bone loss requires heavier treatments.
